About CGSA

Built by neighbors. For everyone.

The Columbia Gorge Skating Association (CGSA) is the all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit building The Gorge Ice Rink — the first year-round indoor ice facility in the Columbia Gorge.

Who we are

Like you, we have a love of ice — skating, curling, and hockey!

We are a group of community members who are working to bring a year-round skating facility to the place we call home. Whether you are just following the project, are enthusiastically awaiting an announcement of the grand opening, or you have the time and resources to make an ice rink in the Gorge a reality — thank you for joining us!

The Columbia Gorge Skating Association

The Columbia Gorge Skating Association is exploring state, federal, and private funding for the development of an indoor year-round skating facility in our community. CGSA, in collaboration with regional governmental agencies, recreational partners, tribal nations, schools, and private businesses, will provide recreational and organized sporting activities, including:

  • Public & recreational skating
  • Learn-to-skate programs
  • Youth and adult hockey programs & league play
  • Figure skating programs
  • Curling
  • Officials and coach development
Volunteer leadership

Meet the CGSA board.

An all-volunteer team — neighbors, parents, and Gorge residents who decided ice belongs here.

In for the kids! Semi-retired — below-average hockey player — I play at many things semi-well: skiing, kiting, biking, hiking, gardening, and being a father and grandfather. Send me an email if you want to chat: president@cgskating.org.

Over 35 years of experience selling fun as a career. I have lived in the Gorge for almost 30 years and it has been a goal for most of that time to have an ice rink here as it is one thing we are missing. Master of nothing, but love it all. Hockey is my favorite team sport. I believe an ice rink would positively change the Gorge forever, especially for kids during the gloomy months.

I grew up playing hockey in the Washington DC area. My hockey career got derailed by whitewater slalom racing in high school when I made the US National team and eventually earned an alternate spot on the US Olympic team. Now I teach high school and love the idea of bringing hockey to the Gorge youth. I am also excited about the prospect of being a zamboni driver!

My passion for skating began growing up in Wisconsin, skating on outdoor rinks and frozen lakes throughout the winter. My love of skating was nurtured early on when my father built a backyard skating rink for me each year, creating countless memories and deepening my connection to the ice. Today, I’m excited to help bring a rink to the Gorge for everyone to enjoy!

Marcus grew up in Lake Placid, NY — the birthplace of American hockey — and spent his formative years chasing the game across North America. He went on to play NCAA hockey at Nazareth College and SUNY Fredonia before hanging up his skates as a player and finding a new home in Hood River. The Gorge has given him a life he loves: a community, a family, and a place worth building something for. Bringing a rink to the Columbia Gorge is his way of passing the game forward — so that the next generation of local kids can fall in love with hockey the same way he did, and so he can be right there on the ice to teach them.

Kayla is Hood River born and raised. She runs social media for local small businesses and is the heart behind Hood River Moms, an Instagram community she built to connect local mothers through neighborhood walks, playdates, and events. As a mom herself, she knows firsthand how much this community means — and how much more it could offer. The dream of watching her own kids play hockey someday, in their hometown, is what drives her work on this project. She brings warmth, creativity, and deep local roots to everything she touches.

Frequently asked

The questions we get most.

Where will the rink be built?

Land is under contract and a donor has pledged funding, immediately adjacent to Hood River Valley High School at Indian Creek & Barrett. A community anchor, not a highway exit.

How big is it?

A full 200′ × 85′ NHL-standard ice sheet with multiple locker rooms and ample seating along the ice.

Is it open to everyone?

Yes. Public skate sessions, learn-to-skate programs, youth and adult hockey leagues, figure skating, and special-event ice time. Built for the whole community.

Is CGSA a nonprofit?

Yes. CGSA is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit (EIN: 33-2079456), governed by an all-volunteer board. Donations are tax-deductible.

How much will it cost to build?

$10 million capital campaign. Funded by a mix of individual donors, foundations, donor-advised funds, local grants, and a public-private partnership.

How can I help?

Donate, volunteer, follow us on Instagram (@thegorgeicerink), and tell a friend. We can also use professional expertise — legal, engineering, architecture, fundraising. Email info@cgskating.org.
